Rowling’s Harry Potter for the most popular young adult book series, Stephanie Meyer went from wife and mother of three young boys to international bestselling author after penning the book Twilight and its sequels. Here’s a little background on the author, her life and her work. Stephanie Meyer’s Personal LifeMeyer was born in 1973 in Connecticut and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where she still lives today. She was the second of a family of six children, three girls and three boys. Meyer attended high school in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she was awarded a National Merit scholarship that she used to attend Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. She graduated from BYU with a bachelor's degree in English. She married her husband, Christiaan, who everyone calls Pancho, in 1994 and the couple has three sons, Gabe (eight), Seth (five) and Eli (three). Meyer is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormons, as they are commonly called. Twilight: The BookMeyer began writing the novel that would become Twilight on June 2, 2003 after having a vivid dream about the two main characters, Bella and Edward. Her passion for the characters and their story fuelled her writing. The basic premise of the novel is that Bella, an average, klutzy teenage girl, moves to the small town of Forks, Washington and falls in love with a the beautiful and mysterious Edward, who turns out to be a vampire. Twilight was published in 2005. Since then the book has received much praise including being named a New York Times Editor's Choice and Best Seller, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, an Amazon "Best Book of the Decade...So Far", a Teen People "Hot List" pick and an American Library Association "Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults" and "Top Ten Books for Reluctant Readers". It has been translated into 20 languages. New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking DawnThe Twilight saga continued with the publication of the book’s sequels, New Moon (2006), Eclipse (2007) and Breaking Dawn (2008). The series has sold over 42 million copies worldwide. Twilight: The MovieTwilight was adapted into a film and released in 2008. The film version stars Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. It was directed by Catherine Hardwicke from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg. Meyer appears in a brief cameo during a diner scene in the movie. The movie version of New Moon is presently being filmed with Chris Weitz as director and will be released in November of 2009. Other WorkIn 2007, Meyer contributed a short story to the collection, Prom Nights from Hell. May 2008 saw the release of her first adult sci-fi novel, The Host, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list and remained on the list for 26 weeks. She has several books in the works, including a sequel to The Host, called The Soul.
