This article will look at the pros and cons of Edward and Jacob, the rivals for Bella Swan's affections in Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga novels.

It is the age old question, who do you prefer Edward or Jacob? Well, perhaps not age old, but it is the most common controversy to arise among Twilight readers. "Team Jacob" or "Team Edward", which side are you on? And more importantly, who should Bella choose? Here will be presented the positives and negatives of both rivals, as a way of helping fans to conclude who they consider the better man.

Pros and Cons of Edward Cullen

Edward's positives are manifold, he is inherently charming and polite (if we ignore his initial encounters with Bella) and he is an old-fashioned gentleman, having been born at the turn of the century his mannerisms reflect those of the period. Bella continually describes him as the most beautiful human being on earth, surely a positive, his skin like marble that sparkles in the sunlight. He can read minds, all but Bella's, which could come in handy. He is unendingly concerned for Bella's safety and is extremely protective of her. He also has superhuman strength, as a result of being a vampire.

But Edward's most obvious negative point also lies in the fact that he is a vampire, his desire for human blood is a constant threat to the humans around him. His concern for Bella's protection can at times verge on being over-bearing. He also breaks into her home to watch her sleep at night without her permission. He does not eat regular food and he does not sleep.

Pros and Cons of Jacob Black

Jacob's positives are just as plentiful as Edwards, his main attraction lies in his happy and cheerful personality which can be contagious. Bella describes him as her own personal sun. Due to being a werewolf (or shape-shifter) his body temperature is a lot higher than the average human, which could prove useful in cold weather (as is seen on numerous occasions when he helps heat Bella up). Like Edward, he has unimaginable strength and can run faster than any human. He saves Bella from being killed by Laurent after Edward has left and is not around to protect her. If he is wounded he heals almost immediately.

One of Jacob's negative points is his fiery temper, he and Bella argue on many occasions. His status as a werewolf also means that when he gets angry and changes into animal form when someone else is near, they may get very badly hurt. Also, the fact that he is a young wolf means that he has not yet learned how to properly control himself when he changes.

So it seems that both characters individually have more positives than negatives. What remains for the Twilight fan to decide themselves is whose positive attributes are the most worthy.
